About the Author
It started on a crowded MRT train during evening rush hour. Marcus watched commuters struggle with their phones — thumbs stretched to reach top navigation, screens too small for quick scanning, interfaces built for desktop that just didn’t work in transit. That observation became an obsession. He realized standard mobile design wasn’t built for real-world constraints. It wasn’t built for someone standing in a packed train, holding onto a pole with one hand, trying to check something quickly before their stop.
Marcus brought this insight to his work at a Singapore fintech startup, where he started measuring actual thumb-reach zones on real phones. He conducted field studies aboard the MRT itself — documenting how commuters actually interact with interfaces during peak hours. That research informed everything he’s done since. At DBS, he redesigned their mobile banking app around these principles. At Grab, he optimized the ride-booking flow for one-handed use. At Lazada, he restructured product browsing into thumb-friendly cards. The results weren’t just better usability — they were measurable improvements in task completion rates and user satisfaction.
Marcus holds a degree in Interaction Design from the National University of Singapore, where he focused on human-computer interaction in constrained environments. He’s completed specialized training in touch interface optimization, accessibility standards for mobile devices, and urban mobility patterns. His research on commute-time interaction behavior has been presented at UX conferences across Asia. He’s mentored over 30 designers on building interfaces that respect real-world constraints while maintaining engagement and accessibility.
Now leading the mobile experience team at TapFlow Ltd, Marcus continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with mobile-first design. He’s developed proprietary design systems for thumb-reach optimization, created frameworks for content scanning during transit, and established touch target sizing standards that’ve become best practice across the industry. His approach is research-backed, pragmatic, and always grounded in the reality of how people actually use their phones. He doesn’t design for ideal conditions — he designs for rush hour, for crowded trains, for the real world where users are distracted, in motion, and impatient.
